President's Letter

Ken HollmanKen HollmanLast month I wrote about the need for volunteers to fill positions that will be open at the end of the year. Not much has changed and those jobs still need filling. During our board meeting this month we discussed this and thought that some of you might be willing to join the team but maybe a little intimidated by the level of work done by our current group of volunteers. For instance, Craig and Mary Lou have crafted an award winning newsletter and Rich Chew has created and maintained a first class website and each member of the current board has done outstanding work for the club. How does anyone take on a job and follow acts like these? Good question and the answer we came up is, why not try to find folks who would like to participate but are apprehensive about current expectations and have them work as assistants to those currently doing the work. So if you are of a mind to get involved but are unsure about your capability or would simply like to learn something new, let us know. We might be able to team you up with the relevant person and get you started. Think about it.

Those of you who came out to enjoy the Mine Tour and the Bacon Car Collection all ready know just what special experiences we shared. The mine tour hosted by Mary Zanella and Doug Coffman and led by Rob and Rosa Whisenand was amazing to say the least. Our friends from Winnemucca really put on an outstanding event complete with hardhats, dust, dirt and cattle parading the streets of Midas. I personally developed a real appreciation for those who make their living beneath the earth and the science that goes into separating gold and silver from the ground.

Next we met Ned Bacon at his dad’s collection of around 100 old pieces of automotive history to share their beauty and hear stories about many of these beautiful old time capsules. Ned did an outstanding job of leading the tour and the history lesson which kept even the non gear heads in the group interested. At the end, Ned fired up a lovely old Pierce-Arrow and took some of the ladies including our first lady for the ride out to Ned and Kat’s home for a fine BBQ with great food and plenty to drink. I did not know a car that old could go that fast. I have to say that I don’t think I have ever seen Ned’s 911 displayed in such an interesting way.

Those of you could not make these events, really missed out on something special. Our thanks to the work and creativity of our hosts and hostess’ for allowing us to share their homes, passions and friendship; we really had great times.

As always, have fun.
